About Bowen Therapy

What is Bowen Therapy?

Bowen Therapy is a gentle therapy that looks to remedy the cause of the problem rather than just treating the symptoms. It is not a form of massage although can have similar relaxation effects. The Bowen move is a gentle rolling movement over the muscles or tendons, following a few moves the therapist leaves the room to allow the body to respond. As the Bowen move is so gentle it can be used on people of any age from babies upwards.

A treatment session normally lasts up to 45 minutes although the first visit is usually 1 - 1.5 hours giving time to discuss the primary reason for the visit but also to take a full medical history. It is recommended that no other treatment type is done during the same time period as receiving Bowen therapy.

What can Bowen be used to treat?

Bowen looks at the whole person not just the area of presenting pain or discomfort. So whilst you may initially contact your Bowen therapist about back pain you may find that you are getting relief of pain from a longstanding ankle or knee pain that you've had so long you just live with it.

Some of the problems that have been helped by bowen therapy:

Sciatic type pain
Asthma
Low back / lumbar pain
Migraines
Hayfever
Swollen joints
Frozen shoulder
Repetitive strain injuries
Sports injuries
Glue ear
Colic
Post operative pain
Plantar fasciitis

The list does go on as Bowen isn't looking to fix a problem in isolation and the therapist will treat the whole body before looking to treat the specific area.

Bowen Therapy can be done through lightweight loose clothing (NO JEANS PLEASE).
